The National Emphysema Foundation website is an excellent source of information about emphysema and other lung diseases. Even though emphysema is the fourth largest cause of mortality in the U.S., it is not a highly publicized disease and the average citizen knows little about it. Smoking is the major cause, but increasing air pollution that negatively impacts pulmonary patients, is also becoming an important factor.
